Biography

Argentine field hockey player Gabriela Pando began her career with Lomas Athletic in 1986 when she was 16-years-old, with her going on to win seven league titles (1986, 1989, 1991–93, 1996–97). In 1989 Pando was called up to the Argentina national team and played in the side until 1998. She played in the 1994 Women’s Hockey World Cup in Dublin, Ireland, where Argentina finished as the runners-up after losing to Australia in the final. The following year Argentina won the gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games with a 3–2 victory over the United States. The tournament also served as the qualification pathway for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where the Argentine side finished seventh. Pando played in her second Hockey World Cup when Argentina finished fourth in the 1998 tournament in Utrecht, Netherlands. Regarded as one of the best hockey players of all time from Argentina, she was awarded with the silver Olimpia Award by the Association of Sports Journalists. Pando died at the age of 53 in February 2024 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
