The Polignac family can trace their history back to 809 AD. Charles de Polignac’s father was Guy, who became part of the wealthy Pommery Champagne-making family in 1879 when he married Louise Pommery. Charles played at number four in all four of France’s games in the 1924 Olympic competition, but less than two months later he was in the team that beat Spain in the final of the Coupe des Nations at Deauville, thus making amends for a massive 15-1 defeat at the Olympics. In the 1920s he played a lot of polo on the Côte d’Azur and at Deauville and the Polignac Cup was donated by him to the Deauville club to be competed for in an end-of-season competition.
