Jimmy Jose was the smallest of the Cornwall three-quarters that won the 1908 County Championship. He played for Cornwall against the 1908 touring Australians and three weeks later was in the team that played the Wallabies at the White City for the Olympic gold medal. Jose started his rugby as a boy with the Falmouth “One and All” Club before joining Falmouth Albion and after moving to Devonport, where he worked as a shipwright in the dockyard, he joined Devonport Albion. Jimmy was to suffer a double tragedy on consecutive days in October 1936, when firstly his sister Elizabeth died in hospital and the following day his wife Mary died suddenly. Jose’s older brother William was a member of the crew aboard Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock and Shamrock III that challenged for the 1899 and 1903 America’s Cup.
