Barney Solomon and his more celebrated younger brother Bert both played for Cornwall in the 1908 Olympic final against Australia. Barney was called up as a late replacement for Barrie Bennetts on the morning of the game. Unlike his brother, Barney was not a member of the successful County Championship winning side against Durham earlier in the year. The two brothers were keen members of the Redruth Racing Pigeon Club. Barney played for Redruth and by occupation was a Cornish tin miner who worked underground, and died from advanced silicosis in 1952. He, and wife Eliza, had 14 children.
