Jim Clarke hailed from the tiny County Mayo village of Bohola (population approximately 200) that, despite its size, claimed two Olympians, Clarke and the legendary Martin Sheridan. The two men were first cousins, and at the 1908 Olympics were on opposing sides in the tug-of-war competition, although Sheridan was the non-pulling captain of the USA team. Clarke pulled for the Liverpool Police team who beat the Americans in controversial circumstances, before defeating Sweden 2-0 and setting up a final appearance against the London City Police, which the London eight won. At 83kg, Clarke was the lightest member of the Liverpool team.
