Paddy Philbin moved to Liverpool as a teenager and started work as a farm labourer, before joining the Liverpool City Police force. He was a member of the Liverpool Police tug-of-war team, appearing as the Great Britain second team, at the 1908 London Olympics, and pulled in the controversial win over the USA. The Liverpool team then beat Sweden 2-0, before losing by the same score to the London City Police in the final.
