Hailing from North Lancashire, Thomas Swindlehurst moved to Liverpool to become a constable with the Liverpool City Police. Based in the West Derby area of the city, he became a member of the force tug-of-war team, and was part of their team at the 1908 London Olympics. He was in the eight that pulled in the controversial match against the United States, who subsequently withdrew. He was then part of the team that beat Sweden 2-0, but then lost by the same score to the London City Police in the final, to win a silver medal.
