Walter Tammas was originally a constable at C Division of the Metropolitan Police, before moving to K Division, where he was based at Plaistow, and pulled for their tug-of-war team. Tammas was in the K Division team beaten in the tug-of-war final of the Metropolitan Police H Division Sports in 1906. Their conquerors were the City of London team, the gold medal winners at the Olympics two years later. Hammas did not compete at the 1912 Olympics but, in 1913, was a member of the London team that won the British Police title. Tammas later became the licensee of the White Swan Hotel in Great Yarmouth, and was also the chairman of the Great Yarmouth Association of Licensed Victuallers.
