An outstanding horseman, Hamburg-born Robert Miles Reincke served as a cavalry captain in the German army in the Great War and World War II, Between the two wars Reincke worked for the famous Hamburg shipping company Sloman, becoming a director of the holding company in 1938 a year after he became Chairman of the Hamburg Seaman’s Mission, both posts which he held up to the time of his death.
Reincke played polo for his home-town club, which was formed just a few months before Reincke’s birth in 1898. He captained the German team at the 1936 Olympics and played at number three in their two games against Hungary. A long time after the end of the War he played a large part in reviving interest in polo in Germany when it re-started at the Hamburg Club in 1958. His son, also Robert, was the owner of the luxurious Les Castelets Hotel on the Caribbean island St. Barts.
