A lieutenant in the Hungarian Army who served in the Budapest Artillery, Imre Szentpály played in all three of Hungary’s matches at the 1936 Olympics where they missed out on a medal when beaten 16-2 by Mexico in the bronze medal match. He was also a member of the Hungarian team that beat France in the final of the King’s Cup in Roma two years earlier. Two of his Olympic team-mates, Kálmán Bartalis and Dezsö Kovács, were also on that team. The fourth member of that King’s Cup winning team was Gaston Hámory, who was a reserve for the 1936 Olympics. Two days after the King’s Cup win, at the same venue, the same four lost to a French team in the final of the Count Volpi di Misurata Cup.
