Biography

An inside-forward, Pat Austen played his club hockey for Old Kingstonians and won representative honours for The South against The Midlands at the age of 19 in 1953. He also won Surrey county honours and 16 England caps. Austen was also in the 1960 Great Britain Olympic XI that finished fourth at Roma. He retired from the game shortly afterwards.

Austen´s retirement lasted a little over a year, however, as he made a comeback with Purley hockey cub and became their cub captain. In 1963 he was recalled to the England team to meet Spain to add to his tally of 16 caps. Austen´s wife Hilary played hockey for the Bank of England Hockey Club.
