John Bell went to Birmingham University in the mid-1950s to study medicine. A half-back or centre half, he played hockey for the University XI and in 1954 was a member of their team that played Loughborough College in the final of the British Universities Championship.
Between 1959-61 Bell did his two years National Service in the Army with the Royal Army Medical Corps and rose to the rank of captain. He also became captain of the Army hockey team and played for the Combined Services team. During his time in the Army he was selected to play for the Great Britain team that finished fourth at the 1960 Roma Olympics.
After leaving the Army, Bell played his club hockey with Sutton Coldfield, the town where he was a general practitioner. He became club captain and was also skipper of the Warwickshire county XI. Bell also played for England and Great Britain. Bell and his wife Pamela were both keen tennis players and were members of the Four Oaks Tennis Club in Sutton Coldfield.
