John Bennett was educated at Harrow, where he made the football XI, and then went up to Magdalene College, Oxford, where he won a hockey blue in 1907 and 1908. After graduating, he played for Hampstead and Surrey and was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple in 1911. He made the first of his 34 appearances at right-back for England that year but, despite being wounded while serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, the majority of his international honors came after the war. An all-round sportsman, Bennett represented Magdalene at cricket, associational football, rugby football and hockey, played cricket for Berkshire and had a golf handicap of five.
