Alexander Burt was the son of a Rutherglen farmer and worked on the family farm along with his brother, and fellow Olympian, John. The siblings both played hockey for Rutherglen, Scotland, and Great Britain. Alexander made his Scotland début in 1905 and became an ever-present for five years, winning over 20 caps.
Later, Alexander became a leather merchant by profession, and in the late 1920s went to live in the United States where he was a leather manufacturer. He returned to his native Scotland, where he died in 1967.
