Returning to Britain to complete his medical studies at the University of Wales, Cardiff, he joined Newport Athletic Hockey Club and was to make his international debut for Wales against Ireland in 1947.

A forward with a reputation as a fearsome exponent of the penalty corner, he played for Great Britain in all five matches of 1948 hockey tournament, winning a silver medal as Britain were outclassed by India in the final.
