At Kingston Grammar School, Gerald Logan and Stanley Shoveller were contemporaries. Logan played at inside-right and Shoveller at centre-forward and their close understanding of each other’s play took them from the school XI into the Hampstead, Surrey and England teams together. They were team-mates at the 1908 Olympic Games and with Logan scoring five goals and Shoveller seven, between them they accounted for exactly half the 24 goals scored by England in their matches in the Olympic tournament. Logan played nine times for England before emigrating in 1909.
