Standing 6-4 (1.93) tall and weighing 14 stone (89 kg. [196 lbs.]), Harvey Wood was an unusually large man for a goalkeeper. After understudying the international, LH Gurney, at West Bromwich, the 23-year-old Wood won a regular place in the club team in 1908 and in his first season of top class hockey won international and Olympic honors. He played for England in all their matches in 1908 and, including the Olympic Games, he only conceded six goals in seven games. Despite a successful first season at international level, Harvey Wood did not play for England again.
