Birgit Hahn and the West German female field hockey team won the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics round-robin tournament, finishing with six points. She was also World Champion in 1976 and World runner-up in 1978. Hahn also won the European Indoors in 1977 and won a bronze at the 1984 Europeans. She won 91 international caps (including 11 indoor) between 1975-84.
Domestically, Hahn played with Viersener THC, Schwarz-Weiss Neuss und Münchener SC. Her niece Lisa Hahn-Altenburg won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
