German field hockey player Irina Kuhnt competed in two Olympic Games, winning the silver medal in 1992 after losing the final against Spain 2-1 after extra time. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Four years later at Atlanta the team placed a disappointing sixth.
Internationally, Kuhnt won another silver medal at the 1991 European Championships, and a bronze medal at the 1995 Europeans. She also won the European Indoors in 1987, 1990, and 1992. In total, she played 147 international matches (including 9 indoor) from 1987-96. Domestically, Kuhnt played with Eintracht Braunschweig and later Berliner HC, whom she helped to win the national title in 1994 and 1996, and also the indoor title in 1995 and 1996.
