Susi Schmid and the West German female field hockey team won the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics round-robin tournament, finishing with six points. She was also on the team that finished fifth at Seoul four years later, after a 4-2 win against Canada in the classification round. Schmid became World Champion in 1981. She was also the European Indoor Champion that year, and won the bronze medal at the 1984 Europeans, and in 1986 was World Champion again. She won 134 international caps (including 11 indoor) between 1979-88.
Schmid started her career as a goalkeeper but in 1984 turned to becoming an all-round outfielder. Domestically, she played with RTHC Bayer Leverkusen. In 1982-83, and 1985 she won the German Championship and in 1981-82, 1984, and 1987, the German Indoor Championship. In 1987 she moved to SC 1880 Frankfurt and won the German national titles again in 1988 and 1989. Schmid later became a graduated sports teacher.
