The German field hockey team won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics after losing 8-1 to India in the final. Defender Hermann auf der Heide played in the 6-0 win over Denmark in the group stage. He won five international caps between 1936-42. At the club level he played for Turnverein Sachsenhausen 1857 and won the German Championship in 1939 and 1943. His brother Eberhard was also a field hockey player.
