Christian Bassemir was the goalkeeper to the West German male field hockey team that won the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, losing the final against Pakistan after extra time 2-1. In 1982, the team also lost the final 3-1, again to Pakistan, at the World Cup. In 1980 and 1984 he won the European Indoor title, and in 1983 he won bronze at the European Championship. He won 67 international caps (including 15 indoor) between 1976-85.
Domestically, Bassemir played with HC Heidelberg, helping them to win the German Championship in 1982. By profession, he became an orthopedic surgeon and worked as a reviewer with the Deutsche Sporthilfe.
