The German field hockey team won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics after losing 8-1 to India in the final. Goalkeeper Karl Dröse played in the 6-0 win over Denmark in the group stage, in the 3-0 semi-final win against the Netherlands, and in the final. Between 1935-39 he won 11 international caps. At the club level he played for Turnverein Sachsenhausen 1857 and won the German Championship in 1939 and 1943. His nephew Horst Dröse won the Olympic gold medal in 1972.
