Field hockey player Herbert was a member of the first German team to win an Olympic hockey medal, when they beat Belgium 3-0 to win the bronze medal at Amsterdam in 1928. He won 19 international caps between 1926-34. At club level he played for Berliner SC, winning the Brandenburg Championships in 1921 and 1924.
