Hardayal Singh was an inside forward on the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Singh was a career military officer. He joined the Sikh Regiment in 1949 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion. His hockey career was spent entirely with the Sikh Regiment hockey team, first as a player and later as a coach. Singh later coached the Indian national team and was awarded the Dhyan Chand Award for his lifetime contribution to hockey.
