Tejinder Singh Rao spent much of his young life playing field hockey and, at a young age, represented his native Kenya in the sport at the 1946-1947 Kenya vs. All-India international. His most notable international experience, however, came at the 1956 Summer Olympics where, as a member of the Kenyan hockey delegation, he participated in two of the team’s matches: a 2-0 losing effort against Australia and a 1-1 draw against Great Britain. He had more success at the national level, however, as a member of Sikh Union Nairobi (now known as Simba Union), winning the Ujagar Singh Rai Cup with them in 1957. The following year the club dominated the national scene, taking the Ujagar Singh Rai, Kesar Singh, Siri Guru Gobind Singh, and Aggarwal Cups, while in 1959 they were the winners of the M.R. D’Souza Gold Cup. Singh Rao later moved to England, where he worked as a photographer, and died in the London suburb of Ruislip in August 2001.
