Chuah Eng Cheng was one of five sporting brothers, one of whom, Chua Eng Kim, played alongside him at the 1956 Olympic hockey tournament. Chuah Eng Cheng was a fullback who played for Selangor from 1940-56, was with North Malaya in 1946-48, and South Malaya in 1940, 1954, and 1956. He played for Malaya against Pakistan in 1955. Chuah captained the North team in 1955.
Chuah was better known as a cricketeer. He played for Malaya in 1955 during a Hong Kong Tour and was captain of the Selangor cricket side in 1954-55. He represented North Malaya in 1947-49 and 1953-55, and South Malaya in 1950, and played cricket for Malaya against Hong Kong in 1948. He was educated at the Victoria Institute in Kuala Lumpur.
