Mike Shepherdson excelled in hockey (field), football (soccer), and cricket. He competed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and at the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games in hockey, winning a bronze medal at the 1962 Asian Games. He captained the Malayan national teams in cricket and hockey, and was a goalkeeper for Selangor FA. He was considered the best Malayan centre-half of his era in hockey. In cricket, Shepherdson scored 132 runs in 1961 against Hong Kong in the Inter-Port match. At the 1956 Olympics he was named to the Olympic hockey all-star team, the first Malayan to achieve that. In 2011 Shepherdson was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) Hall of Fame.
