Gerard Overdijkink was selected for the Dutch Olympic hockey team for the 1956 Games, which was favored for a medal. But shortly before the opening ceremony, the Dutch government decided to boycott the Games because of the Soviet intervention of the Hungarian Revolt. Overdijkink, who won a total of 41 caps, did get to play at the Olympics four years later, when the Dutch team placed 9th. While a student, he played for DSHC, winning the Dutch title in 1958. The rest of his life, he was active for SCHC, the club from his hometown. He played both hockey and cricket for the SCHC, and served as chairman for some time.
