As the goalkeeper of the Dutch field hockey team, Ton Richter won a bronze medal in the 1948 Olympics. After narrowly losing to eventual champions India, the Dutch defeated Pakistan for the bronze, although they drew their first match for third place. Richter was capped a total of 16 times, but the Olympics were his only major tournament. In the Dutch league, he played for Be Fair, HMHC and Kameleon, all clubs from his home town of Hilversum. Between 1954 and 1964, he served on the board of HMHC.
