Noel Hobson took up field hockey in his youth and had a lengthy senior career with Canterbury Hockey, playing through much of the 1950s and 1960s and captaining his team for significant spells. Internationally, he represented New Zealand from 1955 through 1963, including at two editions of the Olympics, 1956 and 1960, where his nation placed sixth and fifth respectively. After his domestic career ended he turned to coaching, a field in which he worked through the 1970s and 1980s. In his later years, he was also an avid golfer. His son Scott represented New Zealand in field hockey at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
