Ernst Stahl

Ernst Stahl had studied architecture in Stuttgart and art history in Bonn. From 1911-39 he worked as a freelance architect in Düsseldorf. During these times he was responsible for the preservation of the Rhenish castles as the provincial conservator. He also set up youth hostels in Burgen and planned a number of new buildings.

During World War II he worked in Wiesbaden, München (Reichsautobahn), and Krakow. After the war, he settled again in Düsseldorf and was busy with the reconstruction of youth hostels. The Jugendherberge Altenahr (Youth Hostel Altenahr) designed by him was opened in 1927 initially with 125 beds. With a short break at the end and after World War II, it has always been used as a youth hostel. Although Stahl’s participation is probable according to German sources, it is only listed in the catalog of the exhibition in the name register, but not in the list of works.
