Biography

Judith Bain, or Herriott as she was at the time, started fencing during her time at Glasgow High School. She joined the Glasgow Fencing Club before a move to London, where she joined the Salle Paul Fencing Club and in 1968 had the honour of becoming the first Scottish woman to fence for Great Britain at the Olympics. This came just a few months after she became the first Scottish women to win the coveted Desprez Cup. The Olympics were not very successful Games for Bain, but two years later in her native Scotland she won a silver medal in the team foil event at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
