Gladys Daniell was the British women’s foil champion in 1911 and 1912 but did not defend her title in 1913 following the death of her brother Leaf just two months before the championship. When the event resumed after World War I, Daniell finished runner-up to Charlotte Walker in 1920, but went on to win her third title the following year and added a fourth in 1924. That year she made her Olympic début but was eliminated at the semi-final stage. However, in Amsterdam four years later, she reached the final pool of eight, but with only two bouts won, finished fifth overall. Daniell first won the Alfred Hutton Memorial Cup in 1921 and followed up with two more victories in 1925 and 1926.
