Biography

Cardiff-born Julia Davis first attracted attention when she won the British schoolgirls senior title in 1959. Her studies curtailed her fencing career for a few years, but in 1965 she represented Great Britain for the first time and finished third in that year’s Women’s National Fencing Championship. Davis was a London-based PE teacher at the time.

A member of the Polytechnic Fencing Club, Davis was selected to represent Wales at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Kingston, Jamaica. She was also selected for that year´s World Fencing Championships at Montréal. Shortly after competing at the 1968 Mexico Olympics Davis got married, and in 1970 took part in her second Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh, under her married name Barkley.,
