Biography

When Margaret Stafford won the British women´s national foil title in 1959, it was the first time the name of Gillian Sheen had not appeared on the trophy since 1950. In winning, Stafford, who was a medical student at University College Hospital London, became the first representative of the University to win the title. During her time at University, Stafford won four individual national universities titles between 1956-59.

Also in 1959, Stafford took part in the World Championships in Budapest and reached the foil quarter-final. Two years earlier she had competed in the Paris Worlds. Stafford was a reserve for the Great Britain foil team at the 1960 Roma Olympics, but she did take part in the individual competition, failing to progress beyond her first-round pool.

Stafford married Jeremy Christie-Brown, a doctor at the University College Hospital in 1962. She was later involved with giving contraceptive advice to young single people and was chairman (now chairperson) of the London Brook Advisory Centre´s Doctors Group. Her book Beyond the Disappointment of Sex was a top seller.
