Toos van der Klaauw (later married Steensma) participated in the 1936 Olympics as a foil fencer, having won her first Dutch title earlier in the year. She would regain that crown in 1941 and 1943, and continued to fence into the 1950s, placing 3rd at the 1953 edition, qualifying her for the World Championships. She was also a decent sabre fencer, but no Dutch championships in that weapon were held until 1996. Besides fencing, Van der Klaauw also competed in track and field. In 1937, she placed 4th in the 200 m at the Dutch Championships (won by Fanny Blankers-Koen), while also contesting the long jump.
