Ole Albrechtsen graduated with a medical degree from the University of København in 1951 and finished his surgical training in 1959. He later worked as a cardio-thoracic surgeon at Aarhus University, becoming a professor of surgery in 1981 and was appointed chief medical officer of the Aarhus University Hospital, serving in that role from 1990-92. He also studied in the United States and Australia and was a visiting professor at Cairo University. He received numerous research awards and had multiple publications, especially in the areas of fibrinolysis, coagulation, and cardiac surgery.
