Sadly, Edmond Brassart was probably the first ever modern Olympian to die. Officially he died on 19 August 1900 at 0130 in the morning when his body was recovered and transported to the hospital, but he probably died in the late hours of 18 August 1900. He was one of four victims of a temporary wooden bridge collapse on that date, along with 30-50 more injured. The bridge, known as Passerelle des Invalides, because it was next to Pont des Invalides, one of the bridges in Paris, had been specially built for the 1900 Exposition.
