Charles Clapper competed in épée and sabre masters’ events at the 1900 Paris Olympics. Clappier began fencing at 17-years-old. He joined the 11th Cuirassiers at Luneville as a prevost and was then admitted to the Joinville Normal Military School. He became a teacher at the Preparatory Military School of Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort.
Clappier later taught at the Athenian Club, the Lycée Makris, and then at the Military School of Officer Cadets. In 1912 he accompanied a number of his Greek pupils to the Stockholm Olympics. In 1920 Clappier settled in Dunkirk, where he was named professor at the Collège Jean-Bart and the Collège des Dunes. Clappier’s wife was a famous Romanian singer/actress who eventually moved back to Romania.
