Gaston Cornereau competed in épée at the 1924 Paris Olympics, just missing the podium by finishing fourth. Cornereau also won two medals at early versions of the World Championships, both in épée, with a silver in 1921 and a bronze in 1922. Cornereau served in the French military in World War I, and also won a bronze medal in épée at the 1919 Inter-Allied Games.
