Despite a career in fencing that stretched from his time at Cambridge University in the early part of the 20th century, through the 1950s, David Craig never had a British title to his name. However, he appeared in two Olympic Games, 1924 and 1948, and also represented Great Britain in the European and World Championships in 1931, 1933, 1934 (when he captained the British team), 1937 and 1947. He became the oldest fencer to represent Great Britain at the Olympics in 1948, at the age of 61.
A long-standing member of both the Lansdowne and Épée clubs, his greatest individual honour was in winning all three main Épée Club competitions in 1939, the Ranelagh Cup, Inns of Court Gold Cup and Lavradio Cup. Craig was a keen artist and skilled craftsman, and made his own unique handles for his épées. When he took up archery, he also made his own bows and arrows.
