Bert Pelling won the British Épée Championship in 1933 and 1934, and having represented Great Britain in the two Olympics either side of World War II, won the British title for a third time in 1951. His son John won the same title in 1961 and 1965, and also competed in two Olympics, 1960 and 1964, winning an épée team silver in the first of those two Games. Bert Pelling was still competing in the British Championships in 1960, (along with his son), more than 35 years after he first challenged for the épée title.
