Biography
A member of the Sabre Club. Eric Startin was originally selected as a reserve for the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics, but eventually made it onto the sabre team. He finished a disappointing joint last in his opening pool, however, with just one bout win to his credit.
Startin worked on the London Stock Exchange and during World War I served with the 28th Batallion, County of London Regiment (Artists’ Rifles). He won the British War Medal and Victory Medal and later was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. After the War he improved considerably as a fencer but, despite reaching the final of the Sabre Championship on six occasions, never won the title.
