As a military officer Imre Petneházy was a modern pentathlete of the Ludovika Academy Sports Association and a fencer of the MAC. He competed between 1927 and 1939, being a member of the first national team in MP. In 1932, he finished 19th in the individual at the Los Angeles Olympics, also competing in épée competitions, where he was eliminated in the qualifiers. Imre Petneházy was Hungarian champion four times as a fencer. On May 1, 1943, he was appointed Major, served in Galicia and the Carpathians in 1944 and 1945, and in 1945 was taken prisoner by American and then Soviet forces. Returning to Hungary, he worked for the Electronics Electricity Company in Budapest and then for the design department of the Renovation Company in Kecskemét.
