Pál De Rosty

Pál Rosty came from a distinguished family. His father was a chamberlain, ambassador, and an authorized minister. His father wanted Pál to become a diplomat, so he was educated in Paris. Although he spoke his native language only poorly, he was always a proud Hungarian. In Paris, he learned épée fencing and soon rose to the top of the world rank, winning 12 events during his short career, and finishing second in the 1912 French Championships.

Prior to the Olympics in Stockholm, he offered his services to his home country and represented Hungary as an épée fencer in the individual contests, although due to a latent illness, he had to give up the competition. Two months later, already severely ill, Rosty returned to his mother in Budapest, where he died a few days later.
