Biography

Jenő Szántay studied at the University of Budapest, and later joined the Army with the Austro-10 Hussars, commanding the machine gun squadron. He also became a top fencer, mainly as a sabre exponent. He competed for both the Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC) and the Pécsi Atlétikai Club (PAC). He was the individual Hungarian sabre champion in 1908, and team champion in 1912. The Austrian Imperial Command would not allow him to participate in the 1904 and 1906 Olympics as a Hungarian athlete. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, he was fourth in the individual sabre with 13 wins, but was not a member of the gold medal-winning team. Szántay lost his life early in World War I, during a battle in Limanowa, Małopolskie, Poland.
