Tibor Székelyhidi graduated from the Ludovika Military Academy in 1927, then served in Budapest. He later worked in Nagyatád and Pécs after obtaining qualification as a sports teacher and fencing master.
Initially, Székelyhidi competed in sabre, but in the early 1930s he achieved outstanding results in épée, which was becoming more and more popular in Hungary at that time. Between 1934 and 1940 he won four team national titles in the colors of Honvéd Tiszti Vívóklub. In 1936, as a member of the Hungarian épée team, he participated at the Berlin Olympics, but the team was eliminated early.
Between 1940-41 Székelyhidy worked as a sports teacher at Ludovika. From 1941-43 he taught in Kőszeg, then he was directed to the battlefield, where he was captured by USA forces, and only returned to Hungary at the end of 1945. After that he became involved in sports as a fencing master. He also worked for the modern pentathlon team, but he was mainly active in the field of youth education. In the 1970s, he was the head of the KSI (Central Sport School) department, where he also taught sabre fencing.
