Dan Alon was an Israeli fencer at the 1972 München Olympics who was awakened by what he first thought were fireworks on the morning of 5 September. Looking outside his Olympic Village apartment at 31 Connollystraße, he saw two terrorists and realized what was happening. Alon helped four of his teammates to hide, and they were able to escape through a balcony.
Alon won the Israeli championship for the first time in 1960, when he was only 15, three years after he started fencing, and then would win his last one in 1991, at age 46. It was not until 20 years after the 1972 Olympics that he would speak of the events of that day in München.
