Guido Balzarini was just three months shy of his 50th birthday when won his Olympic gold medal in Paris. He only fenced in the quarter-final bout against the USA, winning all his individual matches. Balzarini ranks as the oldest Italian gold medallist in Olympic history. He is not the oldest fencing champion; Aladár Gerevich was 50 when he won his seventh gold medal in 1960. In honor of his sporting achievements, Balzarini was awarded a Gold Medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
